This process uses a die-struck metal the same thickness as used
for cloisonné style pins. The recessed areas
of the pin are filled with metal.
Pin borders are hand color filled with soft enamel
resin then baked to harden. The surface has recessed areas and epoxy domes can
be added. Pantone color matching is
available. These lapel pins are similar to
our cloisonné style pins but the edges between the
colors are not as smooth. The die is made similar to cloisonné,
but soft enamel is used. Soft enamel pins are ideal
when cost is a factor or fine detail is not needed. An
epoxy dome can be added to
the pin to prevent scratching and to add luster - the
additional cost is $0.10/pin. Soft enamel pins
can be struck into iron making them
a very cost-effective alternative to hard enamel pins.
Soft enamel pins are frequently used for sport pins, corporate pins and other
types of lapel pins. Soft enamel lapel pins mimic hard
enamel at a reduced cost. They are stamped with your
design, filled with enamels, and baked to fuse
the enamels to the pin. The
end result is very close in appearance to hard enamel pins.
Soft enamel pins are struck from a die that is cast from your
unique design. The pin is then
baked in a kiln to harden the enamel.
The basic manufacture is similar to
the cloisonne style pins,
except that soft enamel is used. A liquid enamel is
filled into the recesses of the pin. (Colors are
filled below the metal walls, so that they do not run together). Baking sets the
colors. A clear epoxy dome is usually applied over the surface to protect the
enamel from weathering and cracking. The most
economical lapel pin is die
struck soft enamel
iron. Advantages: A less expensive item
providing the look of cloisonne; medium to high
perceived value; PMS colors can be matched; custom shapes. Disadvantages:
Colors must be separated by thin metal walls; small areas cannot be color
filled; colors may chip or fade if not protected by an epoxy dome.
Die struck soft enamel pins are perfect
for a wide range of uses. A service award pin from Maxwell Medals and Awards
allows you to recognize employees for years of hard work and service. Custom
pins, color pins and lapel pins are ideal for sports teams and schools as well.
